EP 73. Marriage Quickie (3 of 4); A Lifestyle of Romance
In the podcast, Greg and Linda Smith present a compelling case for the necessity of romance as a vital component of a thriving marriage. They advocate for an understanding of romance that goes beyond societal clichés, proposing that true romantic expression is found in the everyday interactions between spouses. The hosts provide practical suggestions, such as verbal affirmations of love, thoughtful surprises, and the importance of physical affection, all of which serve to fortify the emotional connection partners share. They illustrate that romance can manifest in simple acts, such as a morning kiss or a surprise text during the day, reinforcing the idea that romance is not an isolated occurrence but rather a continuous commitment to nurturing one’s partner. This episode ultimately encourages listeners to actively engage in romantic behaviors as a way to enhance their marital relationship and deepen their love.
Takeaways:
- Investing time in marriage can yield significant insights and improvements in relationships.
- Romance should be viewed as an ongoing lifestyle rather than a singular occasion or event.
- Effective communication forms the foundation upon which romance can flourish in a marriage.
- Daily expressions of love, such as verbal affirmations and thoughtful gestures, enhance intimacy and connection.

Speaker AYour booster shop for the week.
Speaker AAnd today we're going to be doing our third marriage quickie and that's going to be on romance.
Speaker AWell, romance should be a lifestyle, not just the one day a year event.
Speaker BHappy Valentine's Day.
Speaker AThat yeah, it should be year round event or not just when you want something.
Speaker AAll right.
Speaker BPoint at comment maybe.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BAll right, Romance fan, the Flame.
Speaker BWe're excited to get into this one.
Speaker BNow we've had one on the God factor.
Speaker BGetting God working in your marriage, trusting him to help you overcome and have the best marriage.
Speaker BThat's primary number two is learning how and being effective communicator communicators on a regular basis.
Speaker BAnd now we're going to talk about romance because you got to have the first two going so the romance will take full effect on you.
Speaker BOkay, so what we're going to do is talk about first for a moment is what is romance?
Speaker BAnd this is a quickie.
Speaker BSo that sounds kind of funny about having a quickie when you're dealing with romance.
Speaker BBut that can happen.
Speaker BAll right, Romance fan, the Flame.
Speaker BRomance is hard to define.
Speaker BThe following definitions kind of maybe capture the meaning of it.
Speaker BSo think about what it means to you.
Speaker BIt can be a mood, a setting, an action or event.
Speaker BIt's a relationship or a period of time.
Speaker BRomance is a love story, a love affair.
Speaker BIt's a prince charming winning the heart of the princess and then keeping it.
Speaker BRomance breaks up the monotony that many relationships find themselves in and add zest, anticipation and exciting moments.
Speaker AWell, romance also is companionship.
Speaker AIntimacy.
Speaker AIntimacy.
Speaker AAnd that's the non sexual type.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BWith a little bit of sex.
Speaker ASorry.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker AA sense of belonging.
Speaker AIt's the desire to be the object of another person.
Speaker ADesire and love.
Speaker AIt's being best friends.
Speaker ARomance is a life demonstrated daily in big and little ways by expressions that show love, care and compassion.
Speaker AHow do we do that, dear.
Speaker BOkay, we're going to get into that now.
Speaker BSomething she just said.
Speaker BIt's.
Speaker BIt's being best friends.
Speaker BAnd we're doing a series on genuine love.
Speaker BSix ways that we can show love to our spouse.
Speaker BAnd you know what?
Speaker BWe're looking at some of the definitions of love.
Speaker BAnd actually, romance is one way that you show love to your spouse.
Speaker BIt's a core of your marriage relationship.
Speaker BSo romance, if.
Speaker BIf you say, you know what, I'm not romantic.
Speaker BWe don't need romance.
Speaker BYou know what?
Speaker BYou're robbing your marriage from something.
Speaker BIt needs to be all it can be.
Speaker BSo this is a really.
Speaker BWe can say, oh, this is just fluffy flowers and in lighting candles and getting ready for whatever.
Speaker BYou know, it's part of what so much more.
Speaker BIt's just that, yeah, it's something that your relationship has to have.
Speaker ASo a person's relationship might even be romantic, but they just don't realize it because they have not defined what true romance really is.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BYou may not know what romance really is.
Speaker BSo we're going to look at some different ways you can express romance.
Speaker BFirst of all is verbally express your love.
Speaker BOther words, tell your spouse that you love them.
Speaker BTell them all the time, how much do you do it all the time?
Speaker BExpress your love and appreciation by praising them.
Speaker BNot just once a week or once a month.
Speaker BFind things, be aware, notice positive, positive things about their character, and then notice the things that they're doing.
Speaker BAnd don't criticize.
Speaker BSometimes people, all they get is criticize.
Speaker BYou didn't do this, right?
Speaker AYou.
Speaker BYou didn't put the trash can back, right?
Speaker BHow come you didn't take the trash cans out?
Speaker BWhatever it is, find the positive praise.
Speaker BYou can never give somebody too much praise and then brag on them, be their number one fan.
Speaker AWell, I'm going to just add a little bit to what you just said before we move on.
Speaker ABut, you know, when we're praising them, you know, we think it's a lot of times that we're grateful.
Speaker BYeah, that's.
Speaker ABut we don't verbally express it.
Speaker ASo I think that's a good thing.
Speaker AYou know, to, to bring out is, you know, when you see your spouse doing something and you really are grateful and appreciate it, tell them about it.
Speaker BThat is, that is your spouse doesn't know what.
Speaker AYou're not going to be able to read your mind.
Speaker BSo they want to.
Speaker BYou know, we're easy, we're quick to criticize, but we need to be quick.
Speaker AThe praise just like Catch them doing something good.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker AAnd tell them about it.
Speaker ASo another area is to walk the talk.
Speaker AYou know, if you say I love you, well, okay.
Speaker ADemonstrate that love actions speak louder than words.
Speaker AAnd love is sacrificing.
Speaker AIt's self giving.
Speaker AIt's putting the other person first.
Speaker AIt's going that extra mile to serve them.
Speaker AIt, it feels, focuses on the one loved with the thought of self as secondary.
Speaker ASo what can you be, what can you do to be romantic?
Speaker ALike this walk in the talk.
Speaker AIt's being creative on how you express your love.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BSo when it says, what can you do to be romantic?
Speaker BGet creative.
Speaker AThat's right.
Speaker BAnd do it.
Speaker AThere you go.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BThe next one is spouse awareness.
Speaker BIn other words, listen to your spouse or what their likes or dislikes are.
Speaker BSo when they, when, when you're listening, you're showing love.
Speaker BAnd we talked about this in communication.
Speaker BBut when you're listening to your spouse, you know, you can pick up hints on how to treat them, especially in the area of romance.
Speaker BYou might say they see something in the movie and say, oh, that's romantic.
Speaker BOr I heard what sister so and so's husband did for her.
Speaker BThat really is nice.
Speaker BOr just listen to.
Speaker BI remember years ago when Linda was not as sensitive to smells, she used to love a certain type of candle.
Speaker BIt was a French vanilla candle delight.
Speaker AYankee candle.
Speaker BYankee or something like that.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BBut there was only one type of candle that would work.
Speaker BAnd I would remember, I would go out to the store and I would be looking for that candle because why I listened and I heard her talk about it.
Speaker BSo listen to the things that are romantic for them.
Speaker BBecause sometimes what's romantic for you may not be romantic for them.
Speaker AThat's true.
Speaker BMake mental notes of their con comments and act on it.
Speaker AYeah, notes itself.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker BAnd when you listen, it shows you that your spouse is special when they know you're listening.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker ASo daily, say I love you.
Speaker AThroughout the day, say I love you.
Speaker AExpress your love by what you say and do.
Speaker AFor wife men, this can actually be a form of foreplay or making love.
Speaker AIt really is.
Speaker AThat's very special.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BI'm listening, dear.
Speaker BSo what we've done is gone through a day and it has like, morning, afternoon, while you're at work, while you're at home, little things that you can do.
Speaker BNow our list has got a lot more than what we're going to share because this is a quickie.
Speaker BWe're not going into a lot of examples and a lot of detail on all of this because this is supposed to be a short podcast.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BSo one thing for daily is when you wake up in the morning, start the day with the kiss and hug.
Speaker BHow many people start off with their to do list already telling their spouse what to do here and there, Sometime in the morning, find them, give them a kiss and hug.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker AAnd you know, fix breakfast or a cup of coffee.
Speaker AIf it's tea, fix a cup of tea for your spouse and bring it to them.
Speaker AYou know, have it right there for them.
Speaker AOr bring them their Bible or some reading material, whatever it is that they like.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BAnd it now we said kiss when you first get up and have a hug.
Speaker BThat's good.
Speaker BThat sets the pace.
Speaker BWhen you get up in the morning, make sure you do that.
Speaker BYou know, hold your breath if you haven't brushed your teeth or something, but give them that kiss.
Speaker BBut once you get ready to walk out the door, give them that 10 second kiss that we talk about all the time.
Speaker AThat's right.
Speaker ASend your spouse off by saying, I can't wait for you to get home.
Speaker ALet them know, slap them in the butt as they walk out the door.
Speaker BYeah, do that.
Speaker BBut don't go, I can't wait for you to get home because I got.
Speaker AThis list of honeydews for you to take care of.
Speaker BYou know, do the 10 second kids and say, man, I cannot wait for you to get home tonight.
Speaker BGet creative in the morning.
Speaker BAll right, next one.
Speaker BSay your wife is.
Speaker BOr spouse is working.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BCall, just call and send them a text.
Speaker BOr send them a text and say I love you.
Speaker BJust do that.
Speaker BAnd we've talked before.
Speaker AI just called, just called to tell you I love you.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AThat's all.
Speaker BTake time to do that.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ACall or text them and let them know that you're cooking their favorite meal.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AThey will be salvering at their mouth all until they can get home to get that meal.
Speaker ASo.
Speaker BOr you can even say call and tell them wherever they're at at work, and this could be husband, wife, both, go both directions.
Speaker BBut just say, you know what, the kids are gone tonight, they're going to a party and we're going to be home.
Speaker BI cannot wait.
Speaker AWe have an hour.
Speaker BYou know, think even while you're doing different things, how can you be romantic.
Speaker ANow if your spouse is at home, person, call and text them.
Speaker AWhen you're at home, call them and text them and say, I love you there.
Speaker BThat's right.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker BAnd if, if they're home and you're at Work, let's say.
Speaker BCall and say, hey, babe.
Speaker BHey, dear.
Speaker BWhatever, whoever who's home cooking say, don't cook tonight.
Speaker BI want to take you out to eat tonight.
Speaker BOh, I got a special place.
Speaker AThat idea.
Speaker AOh, yeah, that's right.
Speaker AI like that.
Speaker BI got a coupon.
Speaker AOkay.
Speaker BAll right.
Speaker BAnd then.
Speaker BOr just say, hey, hey there.
Speaker BI'm on my way home tonight.
Speaker BIs there anything you need me to stop at the store and get for you?
Speaker AYeah, that'd be nice.
Speaker BYou just call and ask and then probably say no or maybe yes, but then.
Speaker BAnd then while you're in the store, you might even think of something else to get them, like a card or a flower or.
Speaker BOr whatever.
Speaker BSo next.
Speaker AVery, very true homecoming.
Speaker AOkay?
Speaker BThat's when you're coming home.
Speaker AWell, when your spouse is coming home, say you're already home.
Speaker ADrop what you're doing.
Speaker AGet off the phone.
Speaker AGreet your man.
Speaker AGreet your spouse.
Speaker ALadies, greet your man and let them know that you're glad he's home.
Speaker AGo open the door for him.
Speaker AIf you're where you're able to do that, you know, that's a way to let them know they're special.
Speaker BYeah, men are.
Speaker BArborhook.
Speaker BYeah, this is for the men.
Speaker BWhen you.
Speaker BWhen you come home from work, maybe your wife's already home from work or she's a stay at home mom.
Speaker BThe first thing you need to do is find your wife.
Speaker BNot the dog or the remote or your laptop.
Speaker BFind your wife and just say, hey, I'm so glad to be home.
Speaker BAnd give them a big old hug or a big old kiss and say, hey, what can I do to help you?
Speaker BIf you see they're kind of flustered or something, just say, what can I do to help you before we eat dinner or whatever your routine is.
Speaker AAll right, you know, the.
Speaker AThe reason, and we teach this in more depth, but the reason a lot of men will go find their dog is because the dog has found them.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AAnd that dog is just wagging their tail.
Speaker ASo, women.
Speaker AWhat if we were doing what the dogs are doing?
Speaker AWe'd get scratched behind the ears, wouldn't we?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker BNo, I can hear it right now.
Speaker BEspecially for the stay at home moms.
Speaker BAnd I understand this because I stayed home one time for the kids the whole summer while Linda was at work and I was home.
Speaker BI was so glad when school started.
Speaker BBut, you know, we can go.
Speaker BYou know what?
Speaker BI am so tired.
Speaker BI don't want to do all this, but you know what?
Speaker BIt's.
Speaker BIt's not that you have to do it.
Speaker AIt's.
Speaker BYou get to do it.
Speaker AThat's it.
Speaker BBecause your man or your wife is coming home.
Speaker BAnd yeah, maybe you're tired and worn out, but you know what?
Speaker BYou take a minute, 2 minutes, 10 minutes to greet them at the door.
Speaker BOr if they get in before you can get to the door, you grab their bag or, or whatever and say, hey, I'm so glad you're home.
Speaker BWhat can I, can I get you a Coke?
Speaker BCan I get you a cup of coffee?
Speaker BOr whatever your routine is.
Speaker BAnd just take those few minutes to welcome them home, give them a little kiss and, and just be there and let them know you're glad to see them and not hit them with all the junk from the day or what the kids did or what your boss did.
Speaker BHave time just to let them know they're special and you're glad to see them.
Speaker AYou're fan in that flame of romance when you do that.
Speaker BYes.
Speaker ARight?
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker ATogether hours.
Speaker AOkay, well, make time to sit and talk about the day.
Speaker AThat's the reconnecting.
Speaker BYeah.
Speaker AThat we talk about so much.
Speaker AAnd like Greg just said, serve each other with a snack, a glass of wine, maybe a special treat with cheese and crackers or just something like that to take the edge off before dinner's ready.
Speaker AJust some, some little, little thing like that, or it makes such a difference.
Speaker BDuring the day, you could, you can just bring a snack.
Speaker BThe other day I was in the office or in our studio here finishing up or working on, on some type of paperwork, and it was taking some time, actually.
Speaker BWe were getting ready, I think, to go for our trip.
Speaker BWe're getting ready to go on.
Speaker BAnd I've been in here working on stuff and she brought in two or three little treats for me.
Speaker BTotally caught me off guard and said, here, I want you here, I brought this for you.
Speaker BAnd that just blessed me that she thought about me.
Speaker BShe took the time and energy to do that, and I enjoyed it.
Speaker BLittle things like that score a lot of points and just fan the flames of romance.
Speaker BAnd if you get.
Speaker BBe home, if you get home before the other person, be it male or female, and you see the wash needs to be changed out or dinner's not started, put your stuff down, go change the wash out or maybe start dinner.
Speaker BTake the initiative.
Speaker BSo when that other person gets home, they walk in the door, they're thinking, oh, I gotta start dinner.
Speaker BOh, I got this to do and I got to do.
Speaker BAnd they come home and you have already started doing whatever it is, and they're Gonna go, my hero.
Speaker BMale or female?
Speaker AThat's right.
Speaker BYou've taken a burden off of them.
Speaker BAnd then another one when you're home to get for together hours.
Speaker BAgain, this we're kind of talking about when you're home all day, maybe together, look good for each other.
Speaker BI know a lot of times we're around the house, we got our comfy clothes on, we're kind of got our grubbies on.
Speaker BWe're working.
Speaker BBut sometimes just.
Speaker BJust put a nice shirt on or a nice blouse, put a nice pair of pants on or nicer sweats and just look nice while you're walking around the house.
Speaker BIt can change the atmosphere and just bring a little spark in there.
Speaker BSo.
Speaker BYeah, so do that.
Speaker BNext is anytime.
Speaker BWe call it anytime.
Speaker BSurprises.
Speaker BJust out of nowhere.
Speaker BSend a love note just because.
Speaker BJust because.
Speaker BDo a sticky note.
Speaker BI like this one for me.
Speaker BBut play love songs when you're in the car together or around the house.
Speaker BSay, hey, I got this love song, and just play it.
Speaker BA lot of times those old love songs from when you're dating and such, they can bring back memories and they can stir up romantic times that you have and.
Speaker BAnd just play them over the phone to each other.
Speaker BMaybe just get creative.
Speaker BJust be spontaneous with your love and your romance.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker ALike write notes on the mirror with a soap bar or not the permanent markers, but the expo markers.
Speaker AYou can write on the mirror like that.
Speaker AYeah.
Speaker AOr, you know, sometimes I see stuck.
Speaker AOne time I stuck on.
Speaker AIf you lift up the toilet seat in Greg's bathroom, I stuck a sign on there that said, you're still the one.
Speaker AI love you.
Speaker AAnd I stuck it.
Speaker ASo whenever he went to do his thing, that's what he saw waiting for him.
Speaker AWell, here's some other creativity that you got to get creative.
Speaker ARight.
Speaker AAnd so while you're out, what are some things while you're out shopping that you remember your spouse may have commented on?
Speaker AAnd this could include knickknacks or snacks or a surprise of any sort or just a desire, a little need that they might have.
Speaker ABut think about your spouse.
Speaker ALike when you're in the store, like, take the time to find something for them.
Speaker AI remember Greg was out picking up some.
Speaker AI don't know if he was getting some.
Speaker ASomething for dinner or whatever.
Speaker AAnd he remembered that I love Oreo cookies.
Speaker AAnd he picked up a thing of Oreo cookies and brought them into thins.
Speaker AThey were the Oreo thins.
Speaker AThat's right.
Speaker AAnd Buddy brought them in and I think he wanted some too.
Speaker ABut that's okay.
Speaker AI was willing to share.
Speaker ABut, you know, that was special that he remembered that I was really wanting an Oreo cookie and needed one.
Speaker ANo, I don't know about needed, but yeah.
Speaker ASo think about your spouse when you're out at the store and pick them up something special.
Speaker BAnd yes, it takes time and effort to do these things while you're out or whenever.
Speaker BSometimes you just have to decide to be romantic.
Speaker BAnd now we, we've done a lot of little simple things.
Speaker BAnd romance is about all the little things, the big things.
Speaker BIt's the events.
Speaker BIt's going to a nice fancy restaurant.
Speaker BMaybe it's one time I set up a portable pool in our bedroom to have a romantic time in the bedroom in a pool, waiting pool.
Speaker BAnd that's another whole story.
Speaker BSometimes you go, can go to great detail to create, create romance.
Speaker BBut sometimes it's just that simple.
Speaker BI love you and a hug.
Speaker BBut remember, when you're doing this, you're communicating that to your spouse that you thought about them, that you love them.
Speaker BSo as we close up this quickie on romance, let's look at commitment.
Speaker BCommit to each other and yourself to bring the romance and freshness of love to your marriage all year around.
Speaker BAll right?
Speaker BDon't wait for the other person to do it.
Speaker BYou do it first.
Speaker AYou know, we got to be realistic though, in all of this.
Speaker AYeah, there are going to be children and other responsibilities and every day is not going to be fireworks.
Speaker ABut it is a good goal to have allow your spouse room when they get tired, you know, just give them some space sometimes.
Speaker BAnd if you see life is going too fast and your schedule and events, everything is just getting out of control and you're just going, going, going, then what you do is have the attitude, stop world and get off together.
Speaker BYes, things and people will always be there.
Speaker BSometimes you just got to stop, grab your spouse by the hand, so to speak, and go off and have some time away or go back in the back bedroom and sit down and talk and communicate and, and whatever may develop.
Speaker BSo commit to your spouse.
Speaker BCommit to make your spouse feel special and know that you see them as valuable and precious.
Speaker BAfter all, they're number one after God.
Speaker BNow we break down romance and a lot more details in episode 33 and also touch on it in episodes, episodes 15 through 18.
Speaker AOkay, well, we got some honeydews to work on.
Speaker AAsk each other, number one, what their idea of romance is.
Speaker AAsk your spouse what their idea of romance is.
Speaker ANumber two, take action to be romantic according to what they think is romantic.
Speaker AWhat romance is and what's number three, dear?
Speaker BAll the time.
Speaker BNumber three is ten second Kiss.
Speaker BTake time to do your ten second kiss in the morning.
Speaker BMake it a daily habit to where you feel naked or incomplete.
Speaker BIf you don't get that kiss in.
Speaker BBelieve me, when you got the habit going, you miss it.
Speaker BAnd it's something that can change your day.
Speaker BSo say, hey dear, come here.
Speaker BGrab them by the cheeks and say hey Siri, set my timer for 10 seconds and just give them a good old wet one and enjoy.
Speaker AThat's right.
Speaker AWell, we'd love to hear your comments.
